Statement

I moved to the County about a year and a half ago, and I was excited to be invited to make work for this show because I’ve always found the John A. Macdonald statue to be upsettingly prominent in a space that should be welcoming.

My goal with my piece “Remember me” was to confront the imbalance of power in how we memorialize our history. I worked with local historian Graeme Phillips Ph.D to come up with some facts about JAM that people seem eager to forget. My goal with the piece was to ask questions about whose memories are we told to remember and who are we being encouraged to forget. When it comes to history, why should we only remember the good parts?
